First the moon images you took is technically  good. Focus is spot on and metering is OK.  This expected from your photographic background.

most beginners will burnt the Deslandres Crater and the Vallis Snellius area. All it need is a touch of contrast and levels adjustment.

To get a full image frame of the moon using the 50D requires a focal length of 1400mm. So you crop as you are using the 300mm. This will make your image soft and you try to compensate by sharpening the image.

So may I suggest if you want to continue to take single images of the moon using DSLR you concentrate on post processing which looking at your other pictures you are already good at.

Stacking of images will  reduce the noise especially in the shadows. As a start try HDR image of the moon.

Anyway taking many images and processing them such as with Registax (which allows for a bit of rotation) you still need to do post processing.

I think well intending forum members are introducing too many variables at the same time and some of these may burnt big holes in your pocket. I guess it is OK for some.

Most of us are into this for suka2  hobby some more serious than others. Then there are others into serious scientific studies and others are funding equipment purchases. I think one should take that into consideration  in fairness to others.

Remenber Rome was not build in one day. Like my sifu say take it Sloooowly.....lah.

peace. my dua sen

cheers
