Hi,

Jus want to let you all know Dr.Chong from USM will organise a Biggest Starparty in Klang Valley. He personally inform us iaitu Starfinder Astronomical Society.

Please read the statement below:

Proposal for activities in The Summit USJ from 18 to 20 November 2005

TITLE OF 3-DAY EVENT: To be decided.
Organizers of this event:
(1)   The SUMMIT USJ
(2)   “ALNILAM GROUP” which is made up of the following organizations: (i) Astronomy and Atmospheric Science Research  Unit of USM
(ii)   Museum and Gallery of USM
(iii)   Mufti Department of Penang
(iv)   Islamic Centre of USM
(v)   Astronomy Club of USM
(3)   National Space Agency (ANGKASA)
(4)   State Education Departments of Federal Territory and Selangor.

The proposed activities are:

(a)   Exhibition of astrophotographs taken by many amateur astrophotographers from Malaysia and neighbouring countries.

(b)   Exhibition of all kinds of information and materials by registered astronomical societies and astronomy clubs from schools in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Penang and other states.

(c)   ASTRONOMY FAIR. In this section many of the companies in Malaysia can promote the following products: telescopes, digital cameras, astronomy and science books, and science education companies.

(d)   Talks by amateur and professional astronomers. These talks can include practical topics such as “Astrophotography Techniques”,
“How To Start An Astronomy Club In Your School”, “How To Conduct A Star-Party”, etc.

(e)   Competitions for schools and individuals such as: quizzes, space-art  painting, model-making of aliens, model-making of space-craft, Messier Marathon, Best Home-Made Telescope, Best Astrophoto, etc.

(f)   Planetarium Shows. In USM we have a small planetarium projector which we have been using to conduct planetarium shows for 30 people in schools and shopping complexes in Penang.

(g)   AEROSPACE EXHIBTION AND ACTIVITIES. Mr. Sam Gibbs from Aerospace Education Services Sdn. Bhd. has also been helping
us in Penang to conduct aerospace activities for the teachers, students and members of the public.

(h)   Telescope making demonstrations. “How To Make A Dobsonian Telescope”

(i)   Sunspots observations during the daytime. By using telescopes equipped with solar filters we can show the public the current sunspot activity.

(j)   Solar flares observations during the daytime. In USM we have a telescope equipped with a CORONADO hydrogen alpha filter which will allow us to see live solar flares exploding on the sun’s surface.

(k)   Workshop on making water-rockets. By using 1.5 liter carbonated drinks bottles such as Coca Cola, 100 Plus, F&N, SPRITE, we can make the water-rockets.

(l)   Workshop on making water-rocket launchers.

(m)   Water-rocket launching competition. We need a large and empty open space for this competition.

(n)   Workshop on making spectrohelioscopes. By using simple materials such as empty tissue boxes, mirrors and compact disks, we can make spectrohelioscopes which will allow us to see wonderful rainbows in sunlight even if there is no rain. The children will love this activity !

(o)   Workshop on making sundials. Again, simple materials can be used  for this workshop. These sundials allow us to tell the time by looking at the sun’s shadow on a screen made of manila card.

(p)   Telescope clinic. In this activity any member of the public can bring his or her telescope to The Summit USJ to be checked and repaired by amateur astronomers.

(q)     “BIGGEST STAR-PARTY IN THE KLANG VALLEY”

This event can be conducted on the evening of Saturday, 19 November 2005. It should be held in an empty open space outside the shopping complex. It is the major activity of the 3-day event. For many years in Penang, the big star-party has always attracted large crowds of people. With sufficient promotion to the schools in Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Vally and to members of the public, this event will attract many astronomy enthusiasts to The Summit USJ. In my opinion, with the participation of the telescope companies and many amateur astronomers and astronomy clubs, we should be able to gather for this activity 50 (or more) telescopes of all types and sizes.

Apa macam? Siapa nak join? Lepas tu falak-online member must gather to take a "big family photo"!!! Can???

Regards,
Tommy

Actually the purpose of this starparty is not really stargazing. Is to bring the meaning of astronomy to publics. That's why there will have a lot of activities and seminar going on.
