Canon Firmware Hacks for Digic II processor

Kebetulan pulak tengah cerita pasal point and shoot camera saya ni takleh nak off noise reduction, guess what have i found... a firmware hack for selected Canon point and shoot camera... and the good news is the firmware is not a permanent hack (which is quite scary if you ever experienced a firmware update crash before... botak kepala tarik rambut nanti) but you can load it into your SD card and you can choose to up the hacked firmware or original one.

CHDK is a firmware enhancement that operates on a number of Canon Cameras. CHDK gets loaded into your camera's memory upon bootup (either manually or automatically). It provides additional functionality beyond that currently provided by the native camera firmware.

CHDK is not a permanent firmware upgrade: you decide how it is loaded (manually or automatically) and you can always easily remove it.

A sampling of those additional features/functionality.

Main features:

    * Save images in RAW format
    * Ability to run "Scripts" to automate the camera
    * Live histogram (RGB, blended, luminance and for each RGB channel)
    * Zebra mode (blinking highlights and shadows to show over/under exposed areas)
    * An "always on" full range Battery indicator
    * Ability to turn off automatic dark-frame subtraction
    * a higher compression movie mode, and double the maximum video file size
    * exposure times as long as 65 seconds
    * exposure times as little as 1/10,000 of a second
    * ability to use the USB port for a remote trigger input

Additional features:

    * a depth-of-field (DOF)-calculator
    * File browser
    * Text reader
    * Calendar
    * Some fun tools and games

Why would I want to use CHDK?

    * To get Raw file capability on cameras that don't have that ability
    * To get the ability to use scripts
    * to be able to know the battery status at all times (not just when it's about to run out of power)
    * you want or need any of the other enhancement features that CHDK provides

Saya alih perbincangan berkenaan dengan firmware hacks untuk kamera Canon yang guna Digic II processor dekat sini kerana rasanya lebih sesuai, takde nak hijack topik lain.

Saya dah cuba hack tersebut dan memang harmless kerana firmware upgrade tidak load secara permanent kedalam cip tetapi load temporary melalui memory card. So memang quite harmless.

Features memang banyak dan endless should i say, pasal boleh buat script menggunakan uBASIC so it's up to your imagination and creativity. Walaupun uBASIC is not a full-blown programming language tapi memadai dan padan dengan keupayaan Digic II processor nak lagi laju taruk Intel Core 2 Duo la ganti Digic II tu

Jadi keputusannya, ianya selamat untuk digunakan.

Saya tak tahu build mana yang wilsontie guna? Saya guna build allbest (http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/topic,102.0.html) yang sekarang dikira build yang paling lengkap semua features kecuali stereo data features jer belum porting masuk dalam build.

Kalau u guna allbest, pergi ke menu dan pilih Extra Photo Operations kemudian Override shutter speed.

Cara penggunaan menggunakan faktor. Contoh kalau u tengok under Extra Photo Operations menu

Override shutter speeds                     [   1]
     Value factor                        [          10]

yang di atas nilai shutter speed = 10 saat. (shutter speed) 1 x (value factor) 10 = 10 saat.

Override shutter speeds                     [   6]
     Value factor                        [          10]

ini untuk setting kepada 60 saat.

Ingat, keluar dari menu dan set kan kamera kepada manual atau shutter priority kemudian shoot.
Buat masa ni keupayaan shutter speed adalah antara 1/65,000 saat hingga 65 saat. Tunggu nanti mesti ada programmer decode firmware lebih mendalam mesti jumpa lagi tinggi. Tapi pendapat saya, dah sampai limit kamera dah tu.

ya i also use allbest for S3 IS. but i cant find "Extra Photo Operations kemudian Override shutter speed" in my main menu. My main menu are like this:
-RAW parameters
-OSD parameters
-Histogram parameters
-Zebra parameters
-Scripting parameters
-Visual settings
-Misc. stuff
-Debug parameters
-Reset option to default

so, how ar? i dont know which option i need to activate
i go through the website already...but still cant catch it

Wilsontie, mungkin 'raw' release of allbest build untuk S3IS memang tak ada features untuk control shutter speed tu... tak boleh nak confirm pasal saya tak ada S3IS. pada 570IS saya, kedua-duanya berjalan dengan baik dan semua features ada.

Wilsontie boleh try cuba variant kepada allbest build dari http://hem.passagen.se/fsmmal/chdk2.html  ada kat bahagian bawah2 laman web. Khabarnya dia dah tambah berbagai features.

now i can access the extra photo operation already...

Saya ada cuba feature ultra high speed shutter 1/65,000 saat maksimum untuk tangkap beberapa gambar titisan air jatuh ke atas permukaan singki dapur. Sungguh menarik . . .







Kurang2nya ada jugak aktiviti sejak langit mendung seminggu dua ni.
